The 4Cs
Understanding Diamond Quality
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) developed the 4Cs — Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat — as the universal standard for evaluating diamond quality.
Cut — The Most Important C
Cut determines how well a diamond interacts with light. A well-cut diamond will display brilliant sparkle, fire (rainbow flashes), and scintillation (pattern of light and dark). Cut is the only C influenced by human craftsmanship.
GIA Cut Grades (Round Brilliant):
Our standard: We only offer Excellent and Very Good cuts.
Clarity — Nature's Fingerprint
Clarity measures the absence of inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). Most inclusions are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye, but they affect the diamond's transparency and brilliance.
GIA Clarity Scale:
Our recommendation: VS2 or higher offers the best value — eye-clean with no visible inclusions.
Color — The Absence of Color
For white diamonds, the GIA color scale runs from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow/brown). The most valuable white diamonds are colorless (D–F), allowing maximum light to pass through.
GIA Color Scale:
D–F: Colorless — rare and most valuable
G–J: Near-colorless — excellent value, face-up white
K–M: Faint color — visible warmth, lower price point
Our standard: We offer D–G color for optimal brilliance.
Carat — Weight, Not Size
Carat is a unit of weight (1 carat = 200 milligrams), not physical size. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can appear different sizes depending on cut proportions. A well-cut 0.90ct diamond can look larger than a poorly cut 1.00ct.
Pro tip: Consider 0.90ct or 1.90ct instead of 1.00ct or 2.00ct. These "magic sizes" are priced significantly lower with virtually no visible difference.
